Question came about on, basically, what the appeal is of Buddy when companies can just do big data mining themselves. This was the phrasing:
"POK is trying to monetise big data for big data companies. Novel concept which may float for a few years until people realise they can do it far cheaper and more efficiently themselves."
I pointed out that imo this is just just plain wrong, and I wanted to share my thinking in the POK forum
some companies may have done in-house, but I can assure it would have been significantly more expensive than using a platform like Buddy
think about this:
what is the point of 'the cloud' at all, if people can just do it on-premise and in-house? I mean, that's what everyone was doing before 'the cloud'? so how come 'the cloud' is even a thing? how come things like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Office 365 even exist? poople have been doing this in-house for decades before these even came about...
because outsourcing all the costs to somebody who specialises in providing the service is a lot better, cheaper, and easier
have you looked at Buddy' pricing at all? starts at $1000 per month + 150 per TB for storage, and $1500 per month for BI
how much do you think it would cost to do this in-house
1. provisioning of the hardware (plus redundancy plus disaster recovery)
2. enterprise storage (plus redundancy plus disaster recovery)
3. business intelligence analytics
4. security
5. developing your own APIs
6. maintenance of the hardware/software, monitoring
7. developing new functionality
I can assure you the cost of doing it in-house would be orders of magnitude more expensive than what Buddy charge
on top of this, what do you think the setup/development time would be to build something in-house? 6 months? 12 months? probably longer i'd say
and that's assuming you have an IT team that is capable of doing it (taking into account all of the above)
you can use Buddy immediately, and require no experience in IT/development/hosting/security
so let's pick a company that makes fridges, lightbulbs, toasters or washing machines
which option do you think they'll go for?
do you think they would build, or contract out an entire IT department and spend a couple of years and millions of dollars to build an inferior platform, or just pay Buddy $x per month and have every aspect of their IoT needs taken care of, and start reaping the benefits immediately
I'm sure the impressive board of directors and VC investors agree
