Big trouble ahead for the brewers. There is simply no malt barley in the world for all the maltsters. Prices going ballistic - it is the most expensive cereal grain in Australia now.
Sure these companies can raise their prices but the problem is they will not be able to use quality malt from malt barley to produce their beers. Maltsters in Europe are blending crappy feed barley in with malt barley already and that will lead to completely different tasting beers.
They should have been vertically integrating to managing this risk coming through ... At least should have been building strategic relationships with maltsters and growers (to encourage on-farm storage in the good years).
Another silly food and beverage company caught like a deer in the headlights of agricultural inflation - agflation!
