Cheers mate, appreciate that - EA labs, better than starting from google, I'll check em out
Everything else you say makes sense, I suspect it's going to be one of those things that's a slow migration over time - confirms my assumptions I think that i'm better off starting in MT5. I plan to probably hard code my way through this anyway so perhaps won't need third party for EA (besides, the 'marketplace' on MT5 and the MQL5 forums seem to be full of great places to start from what I've skimmed so far).

They changed it, you are correct not an original function of MT5 but they added (due to popular demand I assume) the ability to change your account type between netting and hedging from what I've read - yet to actually confirm myself but I saw a video of it, so unless it's a broker specific thing? I'll be able to confirm if I get MT5 soon.

That's good feedback - aligns with everything else I've been reading.
I suspect it will be a slow death for MT4 users eventually, perhaps once mainstream brokers fully migrate to MT5 (They still run Mt4 I believe, probably for the same reasons discussed here) then retail will be forced to follow suit not long after.
