I think your approach is pretty sound and I'm following a similar path.
Yes I did tune in to the webinar. I agree the results didn't look very convincing and it wasn't their best webinar - but the model concept was very similar to the type of breakout model that you posted about today (and 1 of my 6 EA's is based on the same concept). I have found that the results are very sensitive to the market, timeframe and trade management and what they do is present a concept in a basic form (notice they didn't give the exact settings) but it's up to us to build it and test it with different paramaters.
I think the approach is good because it means (a) they don't spoon feed us a finished product so we never really learn, and (b) by encouraging us to build test and modify using a range of parameters we end up with variations on a theme which is good in the sense we are not all placing the same trades at the same time, etc.
