I'd agree with you from a straight $/GB point of view, but it really depends on the use case.

That said, FRX's solution can compare favourably against a Local SIM in quite a few scenarios:

If usage is very low (mainly messaging/calls whilst out and about) predominately using WiFi where available

6 x 1GB/15 days EU Local Plan (bought 90 days in advance with additional 15% off discount code) = 6 x $5.40 USD = $32.40

Of the local options here SIMsDirect or SIMCorner will run somewhere between AU $37-$50 per 30 days (for slightly more data).

If you picked a a LycaMobile SIM in Netherlands the best you'll do is about 10 Euro a month for 1GB.

If the traveller has mutliple devices, or is travelling with family or a group (and I'd imagine this would be true of most people) using Flexishare to avoid the need to buy multiple SIM cards would be hugely beneficial.

The above calculations are essentially n x SIMs with other solutions, unless you are tethered in which case you are draining battery and aren't able to go to the Heineken musuem, while you partner checks out the Anne Frank musuem.

Also, if the traveller wishes to regularly switch back to their home SIM to check SMS. (Highly annoying have to swap out your SIM each time).

There is also the benefit of having access if you are stopping over in Asia on your way or way back.

Finally, if the traveller has a eSIM enabled phone they can maintain their local number whilst using Flexiroam for data.

The above exaple uses a EU wide plan. If the traveller knows which countries they are travelling in and when they could possible get an even cheaper solution.
