They are referring to the anticipated reduction of dodgy people who mask as mobile operators by building SIMboxes (essentially servers with multiple of GSM SIM modules inside).
Currently these operators can buy prepaid SIMs (in many cases without ID) and use these to arbitrage on voice minutes in countries with high call rates by taking international VoIP calls and shunting them across mobile ntraetworks.
The move to eSIM will makeI it much harder for these guys to continue their trade, as in order to manufacture eSIM's you will need to be certified.
The concept isn't relevant to data because VoIP traffic is data. This is an arbitrage on international voice.
An interesting article, but rather pointless. Perhaps they are just trying to get the 'eSIM' keyword in their blog for better search articles?
