I don't see WiFi as a backward step, it is a completely different value proposition though. Keep in mind that all cellular data customers (including FRX's) use WiFi for the majority of their download by volume. Up to 96% cited in recent Australian usage study.
The value FRX offer is the pervasiveness of connectivity.
A Flexiroam user values the convenience and constancy of their connectivity above price.
Admittedly they value it slightly less than a customer who is happy to roam for $10+ per day while travelling with their native carrier, but certainty more than a traveller that is happy to use a local SIM, free WiFi, hotel WiFi only or using a paid version via Fon/Telstra Air/UNL or NOR.
By moving into inflight WiFi, the level of pervasiveness is increased. I believe cruise ship WiFi would be the next logical move. Perhaps forming relationships with major airport/transport hubs could be next, but ultimately 'normal' WiFi would be great too.
If nothing else, it would provide a point of differentiation in an eSIM world, and strengthen FRX's brand relevance to 'travel' and in particular further travel partnerships. I would wager the average FRX target customer would use the term 'WiFi' interchangeably with the word 'Internet' when travelling.
VoIP is only currently offered for Global Plans (as you mention via JT). I don't believe the price of this particularly matters. The local plans I presume are directly provided by the local carriers, and don't offer VoIP, though I can't confirm this. Have you been able to test?
The airline deals are fantastic! I always envisaged FRX partnering with an Inflight aggregator, but a direct relationship is far better, especially one that distributes the SIM onboard. An airline partner has a far greater revenue opportunity earning from FRX than FRX does from gaining access to the airlines Inflight WiFi, indeed many airlines are already providing access for free.
