Today on Flavours of WA, the Head Brewer from Gage Roads , Dirk Penny, joined us in the studio to talk about their craft beer brewed in Fremantle.
It’s one of Australia’s largest independent brewers, started in 2004 by two brothers, John and Bill Hoedemaker in an old margarine factory.
The name? It’s the stretch of water that separates Fremantle and Rottnest Island. Their beers include Little Dove, Single Fin, Atomic, Sleeping Giant IPA, Narrow Neck, Alby and Break Water.
Today, they brought in a beer brewed especially for Freo BeerFest (9-11 November). It’s yet to be named, but this hoppy, fruity brew is “perfect for a Friday afternoon,” according to Oliver Peterson.

Gage Roads ‘it doesn’t have a name yet’ ale
Gage Roads has brewed a new hopped-up ale for this weekend’s Fremantle BeerFest.
The beer hasn’t got a name yet but we can tell you that it has been double dry hopped with Galaxy, Mosaic and Azacca, has Coopers Schooner heritage varietal malt, aromas of tropical fruit and pineapple nectar and tastes of passionfruit and subtle spice with a broad brushstroke of bitterness.
This hopped-up ale will only be available at Fremantle BeerFest this weekend.
