I note your points about BOL's prior capital raisings having helped to "de-risk" the business. I guess this is will only have been true if that capital had been directed prudently. Unfortunately, BOL management have not exactly covered themselves in glory, on this score. Without spending the time to re-check my records, right at this moment, my memory is that every batch of fresh capital was used by management as a wild eyed opportunity to realise their bold plans for expansion. Like addicted gamblers they kept having another go, with shareholders (and bankers') money.
It is only since the bankers took charge, that a culture of fiscal prudence took hold.
So whilst the balance sheet repair that is occurring is very welcome (and central to the investment thesis), ultimately it will mean the bankers will eventually ease off. Once they do, will BOL managements animal spirits be unleashed again? I hope not.
It's not a beautiful business, from any angle.
But then that's why it's an attractive investment, maybe even a beautiful one. For without managements past exuberance, we would not now have a bloated business at current prices.
With regards to your comments about commodities prices, I don't have any idea what these are doing or going to be doing. However, there is no reason, that I can see, that mining industry capex won't continue to drop very much further. So ultimately, I can see no sane reason to assume that BOL's revenues won't continue to shrink. Of course, as has been stated already, what matters is that costs continue to decline, going forward, at a similar ( or better, at a faster) rate.
Whilst the last half year report was incouraging, this is hardly guaranteed. So whilst the last financials triggered me to make my first investment, I will only allocate more capital here (it currently represents a little over 3% of my portfolio) if the next financials, or outlook statement by management, give me further comfort (and the price remains attractive).
