Fed Govt flags $1b for roads and rail

The Federal Government is set to announce it will spend at least an extra $1 billion on the nation's roads and railways.

The funding package is aimed at modernising Australia's transport networks.

Federal Transport Minister John Anderson is expected to make the pre-election funding announcement later this week.

It will include upgrades of the nation's roads and railways, partly to deal with large increases in freight levels over coming years.

There is likely to be a heavy emphasis on spending in country areas.

A spokesman for Mr Anderson says the package will include at least $1 billion of new funding over four years, to be spent in regional, rural and outer metropolitan areas.
