Most of the new shorts in the last few weeks have been closed and then some, as the outstanding shorts has decreased from around 141 million to 135 million. Shorters play a daily game of selling to try spook longs into joining the selling and then closing the short with at a profit.
However there are 135 million shorts that still need to close and closing these too quickly would cause the price to ramp up. They have to wait patiently until some bad news helps them to get out with their shirts.
