Some do keep their weaners to grow out , many in colder parts choose to sell those calves at weaning . It all depends on what part of the country you are in & in Autumn with the uncertainty of what the winter will be like the prospect of getting $1200 a head for a 9 month old calf is pretty tempting especially if you have been through a few dry gullies & had a few ugly conversations with a bank manager. Bird in the hand planning takes over in many places. This year I have seen a huge amount of hay being made so many are in a good position to take a gamble.I have viewed this situation in NSW & Tasmania in the past few months & the same seems to apply. As for pasture going rank or to waste that is also called "mulching" return from whence it came .
