Main distribution power lines carry the power at an extremely high voltage and is stepped down as it gets closer to the end user, in multiple steps actually so the losses are minimal.
Yes there will need to be a lot of infrastructure in place and hopefully greener power supplying the recharge stations. Lithium batteries are recycled aren't they?
In the future graphite supercapcitors will more than likely replace lithium batts, charges quicker, new developments now hold more power and it's power release can now by better controlled. Standard caps charge quick but also discharge very quickly, usually just used to balance out spikes, for R/C timer circuits or to pull a waveform off phase for motor starting.
