as a born european i do not agree with the above comments...
russian supplies reliant and with no fuss?...are we going to see a new perestroyka over there with fully open/transparent/democratic government?...never knew it was on the cards!...lol...must have been reading wrong news lately...the news i read is nothing BUT encouraging in that direction...germans hate doing business with russians (national sentiment) and they will pay any amount and get their gas from the devil himself if they can, so as not to deal with "reds" (pity Sadam is no more...lol)
as for the highly populated areas - true - but millions of us were living and building right on top of coal mines for decades - those gas explosions were something to feel! - without any tv coverage we knew which mine had the latest tragedy! - and i for one do not believe a little hole here and there would couse to much trouble to anyone...especially if those holes were spewing cheap (cheaper) domestic gas supplies....
