Although the US has invested heavily in oil/gas fracking technology its refining capacity has been neglected and it has no spare refining capacity. The large BP Whiting Indiana refinery has just gone down and could be down for a month just at the peak of the summer driving season. According to the article below Americans have driven more miles in the first five months of this year than they ever have and BP looks like it might lose substantial profits and market share while this plant is down. Prices of gasoline in the Great lakes states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio are skyrocketing at the same time that the oil price has fallen to a 6 year low.
