10. CONCLUSION
Today, alternative media have played a central role in promoting
freedom of speech in Malaysia. The power of alternative media
also reflects the content of every news articles. If the govern-
ment filters, this shortfall results directly from a lack of available
information politically and environmentally. Although there are
opinions from readers available in the newspaper columns but not
all of the opinions written are published. Evidence taken from
the negative tones or portrayal shown in this study was observed
with regards to issues that are controversial or that generate con-
flicts amongst members of the public.
Views regarding rare earth matters were often taken from indi-
viduals who have no actual expertise on given specific issues
made articles published accounted as not a reliable one. The
study found that politicians were the main source for the news
articles written. Therefore, the views will be mostly based on
political agenda rather than the environmental agenda. The main-
stream media in Malaysia usually do not give any room for any
form of debates about the issue discussed in this research. Hav-
ing such dialogues can increase the awareness of the public on
environmental problems besides providing solutions to overcome
possible issues that arose from the industrial project.
