Yes, I was based there as a fighter pilot and living in Penang where my daughter was born, just after independence while the remnant communist terrorists had retreated to the impenetrable Thai border. Their leader Chin Peng lived out his life in hiding there for several decades. The large Chinese Malay community in Penang was reputed to provide considerable support to the uprising in those days.
