Washington Post 14th Feb. While the European Union lectures on global warming, Germany is building 27 coal fired plants. And Italy plans to increase its reliance on coal from 14% today to 33% in just five years.
In all of Europe,40 new "MAJOR" coal power plants are set to be built in the next 5 years.
The worlds actions, more than their words show they understand that economic growth requires plentiful and inexpensive energy.
Obama via his recent senate confirmation hearings, suggest that he does not understand these realities.
Energy secretary Steven Chu continues to be completely unrealistic about near term potential of alternative energies, promising an aggresive clean energy program.
However despite decades of subsidies, alternate energies, such as wind and solar contribute less than 1% of power in America.
No matter how hard Chu wishes it, the fact is that it will take decades, not years,to transition to an alternative energy economy.
The prospect of sky-high energy prices only went up after Lisa Jackson unveiled an outright prohibition on "new" coal fired power plants, starting with her own state of New Jersey.
Even scarier it became law overnight. The people of the state of NJ never had a chance to vote on the plan.
Despite what one hears about America's addiction to oil, domestic consumption has grown only 15% since 1973, however during the same period "electricity" use has shot up 115%.
Right now the US has 760 GW of power to meet consumption. The US will need 135 GW of "new" capacity over the next decade, just to keep the lights on.
The problem is only 57 GW of power are planned. In the past 3 years lawyers with ties to the Sierra club, and natural resources defence council have colluded to block over 65 coal and natural gas power plants from coming on line.
Prediction...in the short term alternative energy will look great as an investment..mid/long term coal plays will go into the stratosphere.
High energy prices will hurt America, considering energy's intimate relationship with the economy, the senate needs to start doing the job American's sent them to Washington to do.!
