The head of listed property at BT Investment Management, Peter Davidson, is investing in Australia's largest listed landowner, the Australian Agricultural Company, and says other industry funds should probably consider the long-term prospects of the cattle station owner.

Mr Davidson, a leading fund manager who has presided over the investment decisions of billion of dollars worth of capital including tough calls on contentious takeovers such as the recent Investa Office Fund, has built a small stake in AACo – one of Australia's oldest listed companies and now almost 45 per cent owned by interests associated with billionaire British businessman Joe Lewis.

The company, which delivered a $67.8 million full-year profit last week and saw its huge cattle stations gain 15.8 per cent in value, has seen its share price jump 30 per cent this year.

Mr Davidson said the stock would be worthy of more institutional money such as Australia's $117.38 billion Future Fund.

"AACo would be very well suited to long-term investors such as industry funds and the Future Fund," Mr Davidson said.

Mr Davidson's call adds to growing demand from investors to own part of Australia's productive farming land where the country's superannuation funds invest on average just 0.3 per cent in the agriculture sector,

He noted the recent jump in the company's property values was a sign of the growing demand from investors.

"The increase in valuation reflects the growing number of asset sales such as Queensland Investment Corporation's purchase of the North Australian Pastoral Company. They are also in line with rising values in other asset classes."
