The Saudis currently setting oil price in US by delivering oil via tanker on US refineries. Saudi sells crude oil in US lower than it sells their oil in Europe and Asia. More like predatory pricing. However, what is happening is US refineries are exporting refined oil to South America. this is allowed. I don't think there is any crude oil that cannot be sold in US. Although, US refineries are designed to handle the heavier Saudi crude.
But I think you should have a read of the quarterly report of Sundance Energy(SEA). It illustrate the difficult situation small US oilers are currently in. It's main cashflow is trading shale oil assets. Revenue from oil represents only about 25% of cashflow. As a Russian oil executive was quoted as saying 'shale oil business is more like a Ponzi scheme'.
