Bought following today in large supermarket chain in Cape Town. All meet is graded and some is aged in vacuum packs
1) Beef eye fillet. Was on special at R133/kg=A$15.0/Kg
2) Rolled de-boned shoulder of 1st grade lamb R113=$12.70.
Normal leg of lamd with bone is R93=$10.44
3) Top grade siver side or topside roast alo aged and boneless in R112/kg= A12.60/kg.
4) Portehouse is more expensive than rump at R90-R102= $9.40-$10.40/kg. Stamped 1st grade. Generally meat from Checkers equals good stuff in Woolies.
Buy i buy a lot of venison esp Ostricth, Kudu, Eland (my favourite) and warthog shanks or sausages. Springbok and Gemsbok also plentiful. Free range in true sense of the word. Duck is also keep. Chicken is crazy. Free range whole chicken R50/kg=$5.40/kg. Portions like drumsticks are low as $3/kg.
Best of all is fresh Mackeral (snoek) from the boats at $1.20-140/kg. Gut and split in half.... add seaoning, wrap in foil and place on BBQ grillfor 6 mins/side. Eat straigth off the tin foil. Has long large bones easy to remove. Fish weigh about 3kg.
