re: **short term opinion please** Steer well clear of millers and other similar companies you are right about ongoing competition and the only way this will change is another round of merger, acquistions and some of the less viable operations being forced out of business - when this happens and margins and profit figures return - perhaps in the next retail / property spending boom 2-5 years out might be the time to jump back in.

Short term other sectors will outperform - resources, biotechs and utilities and energy companies look the pick of the bunch. Those with a bit more money might consider using the ASX worldlink through selected brokers to invest in some emerging convergent technology companies in the US - those with strong balance sheets or strong IP over wi fi, nanotech technologies, partnerships with major software, hardware and technology companies on a 3+ year basis

Healthcare will also take off as the population ages private health care operators ie ramsay healthcare, healthscope or even maybe health, CSL, cochlear.
