I think goods upto a certain threshold (is it GST of 1,000?) are exempt from GST when imported? I know retailers have been pushing to have this threshold reduced.
The high Aussie dollar has meant that the cost of imported goods sold should have gone down and retailers should be able to pass on the benefits to consumers. Not talking particularly about HVN, but prices for a lot of the imported goods like clothing, footwear, etc have not reflected the appreciation of the Aussie dollar against other currencies. Electronics a bit harder to say as prices are in a state of permanent plummeting.
