"Protean Wave Energy, a boutique Western Australia mining company involved now with wave energy, says it wants to partner subterranean data centre builders.
“We believe that our technology will have the capability to provide power and/or cooling to a marine or subsea data centre,” managing director Bruce Lane said. “There are ifs and buts about that though: if they put it in an area that’s completely flat and doesn’t have any wave energy, that’s going to make it hard to generate power close by.”
The company has been testing floating buoys that operate small wave energy generating modules. Each buoy includes a floating counterweight that moves a series of pulleys that generate compressed air. The air can be converted to power nearby the buoy and transported as electricity, or piped to land and converted to power onshore. Buoys are tethered to a weight on the sea floor.
