PB, My understanding of P/E ratio is that it is forward looking. I think your consideration that
"As a rough estimate say mkt cap of DGR is 50 mill. Hence a PE of 10 would mean we were going to earn 5 mill for the year right?" is misleading in itself.
The P/E ratio is a measure of how bullish (P/E >1) the market considers the stocks future earnings will be.
The Price of the share is the variable, so using your analogy. then a P/E ratio of 20 means the market "thinks", or "expects" future earnings will be in the realm of 10 million.
A P/E ratio of "1" suggests earnings are expected to stay flat.
So a PE ratio of 30 would mean the SP is well elevated against current earnings and a very bullish indicator.
I 100% concur that if you are buying, for that matter, any, share based on PE ratio alone you have "Missed the point" as you put it, however to not factor either Share Price, or a companies earnings into the equation would be equally as mind numbing. For that matter, so would buying into a share based on observing a disparity in NTA/share vs SP. However, I fail to see anything funny in someone investing solely based on these factors as they stand to lose a lot of dough and learn some hard lessons, which is in effect something we would like to avoid Im sure.
I also agree that we should all be aware Brokers data can be very misleading, and am sure a quick look around would reveal differing values of PE ratio for DGR,
Which brings us to the intrinsic value of the Sponsored companies, has the value of these increased based on DGRs investment, Yes, Ultimately, I believe it will/has.
And further I also agree that when DGR does take off, it will be in "moon boots", but that's at some point in the future.
My Point is, and I think this has been made very clear, if not I will take up chinese because obviously my english is not up to scratch.
How can DGR, better reflect the value of its sponsored companies, and its subsidiaries in its SP?
Because at this stage,it appears we wait for Corporate action.
So is it unreasonable of me to seek better share price performance based on what we know is an incredible asset base? or do I hear Nick and Karl say to each other in true "The Castle" fashion,
"Tell him hes dreeeeamin"
