Cymon, as Aimforsimon so expertly pointed out, this is a classic exercise in manipulation for purposes of accumulation.

A few players keep the price capped by continually feeding small amounts into the sell side at the same price, thus not allowing natural forces to drive the price higher.

On the buy side, those same players put a collection of massive blocks in to keep real buyers way down the queue. The players don't actually participate in the buying process. We don't see it as it all happens off screen.

Thus the price stays within a tight trading band with a high volume traded.

That's manipulation for accumulation.

It's not illegal but it's certainly at least immoral. But that's greed for you.
