For all those newcomers, you can do the following to buy altcoins.
1. Transfer AUD to BTC Markets via BPay ($2K limit per day) as Poli is not yet resumed after X-mas. At BTC Markets you can buy Ethereum which is required to buy alt coins in other exchanges (see below). If required, you also buy Litecoin, Ripple and Bitcoin Cash. If you really want then you can get Bitcoin but I am out of Bitcoin and only into alt-coins.
2. You can also transfer AUD to Coinspot via BPay ($10K limit - not sure for everyone) or Cash ($2K limit). Coinspot has reasonable good collection of coins but their fees are very high. The platform is so simple to use. If you need some of these alt-coins like ADA, IOTA, Stellar, OmiseGo etc you can easily buy at Coinspot.
3. If you have Ledger Nano S wallet then it is good as you can transfer some of your main cryptos into it. If not, for Ethereum and Tokens on Ethereum platforms you can use the paper wallet at https://www.myetherwallet.com . Make sure to keep your private key (or password and encrypted file) at a safe place. Plenty YouTube videos are there to educate yourself. Similar NeoTracker paper wallet is available for NEO and NEO's NEP-5 tokens such as Qlink, Deep Brain Chain etc.
4. From BTC Market transfer your Ethereum to your private ETH address either Ledger or MEW. To avoid any issues, don't transfer directly to any other exchange wallets.
5. I generally buy alt-coins at Binance, Bittrex, Bitfinix and Kucoin. I find more coins are available to buy with ETH at Binance and Kucoin, also deposits are much quicker to appear. Bittrex and Bitfinix used to be my favourite in the past but due to recent slowness, I find Binance and Kucoin are useful.
6. But alt-coins there using your ETH. Later withdraw then to your individual wallets. Kucoin also allows trading with NEO in addition to ETH. So buying NEO also an option as it is steadily going up and cheaper than ETH.
Most of the ICOs are based on Ethereum and they only accept ETH. ICOs are quite lucrative but high risk as well. 3 of my ICOs are already listed - Naga, CanYa and Simple Token. Except Naga other two have given me huge profit in paper as I am holding most of them. I sold some CanYa to double my investment.
Hope it helps.
