Interesting reading: re: Chinese selling of USD but completely irrelevant to graphene. Can you imagine a government sitting around the table, saying, "hmmm, where shall we put our reserve monies, aside from USD, Euros, Yen, gold etc" and coming to the conclusion that relatively scarce, illiquid, metals like graphene, scandium, cobalt, REE, were the best option. Seriously! There wouldn't be enough graphene in the world to satisfy 0.0000000000000001% of China's treasury mix.
This flight to safety doesn't wash. Gold was annihilated during the GFC, while USD and Yen prevailed. History doesn't have to repeat but we can be damn sure governments aren't going to flock to niche, illiquid metals as a hedge against anything.
More likely upside surprises for niche metals will come from industry and s&d mismatches, such as Tesla's recent deal with REM: LON and BCN: LON to secure a huge lithium offtake into the future (the companies aren't even in production yet, so Tesla are basically taking a view on the supply side of lithium into the next decade or so).
