You're pretty much comparing outdated technology to a energy storage solution which many people will need in the future to store their solar generated electricity. Tesla for example are developing batteries to store energy from their solar tiles. The way I see those examples, is that Apple realised they were using outdated technology and decided to R&D into new things.I'm not a big fan of the logic you're applying. It's like if Apple had only developed the iPhone screen (or had LG or Samsung make it for them). In the original iPhone announcement keynote in 2007 Steve Jobs himself stated that smartphones back then relied on physical keyboards which were limited because they were not easily altered after phones being shipped, and the iPhone with it's large display was able to display a software keyboard that could be changed dynamically (eg. display a keyboard for a different language). If Apple used your logic they would have made the screens only and other companies such as Samsung or HTC would have installed those screens into their phones, because Apple would have said "hey we make computers and portable audio players, phones are not in our field of expertise and so we're not even going to bother considering it". I personally don't like organisations that stagnate and choose not to innovate (off topic but Apple are pretty much going that way now).
I see where you're getting at with the licensing, I just don't like that business model. Maybe it makes sense now as ClearVue is still somewhat in it's infancy, but I hope that one day they look at developing storage solutions.
