One can only wonder about the conversation that was held as the inhabitants of Easter Island cut down their last remaining tree. The Anasazi [thrived from 100BC to 1300AD] turned their wooded wilderness into a rocky grave.... but interestingly what does remain of their society is a philosophy of respect for nature [a kind of hard won wisdom .. don't you think?].
I long for the days when I was depressed.
The bright side? .... Humanity has experienced ecological collapse many times in many places... but always only on a local scale. The psychological impact on the survivors seems to frequently leave them with a new found respect for nature that becomes a part of the culture which develops after the collapse. The onset of runaway Global warming is the first ever instance of a universal calamity and perhaps it will instruct humanity on a universal scale ... it's my hope .... and assuming we don't totally destroy the Planet's capacity to support life perhaps any civilization which develops will carry down the succeeding generations a maturity of respect which is so sadly lacking today.
