ViVOtech And MasterCard Give Away Near Field Communication Enabled Mobile Phones For Contactless Purchases
ViVOtech, a supplier of contactless payment solutions, announced that it has teamed up with MasterCard International to sponsor a giveaway of Near Field communication (NFC)-enabled mobile phones. The promotion will take place during the NFC Technology Summit which is happening in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless 2006 conference. The NFC-enabled Nokia 3220 mobile phones will be distributed today to selected attendees, allowing them to see how simple and convenient NFC technology is for making payments. Each phone has been pre-loaded with a $25 MasterCard Prepaid account, from People's Bank of Paris, Texas and can be used at a variety of contactless-enabled retail stores in Las Vegas or anywhere else where MasterCard® PayPass(tm) contactless payment technology is accepted. Users simply select the MasterCard logo on the phone's display and tap the phone on a special PayPass-enabled reader to complete the transaction.
For the giveaway, ViVOtech provided ViVOwallet 2.0 payment and Service Discovery application software. This software is part of the ViVOnfc Software Suite and can support multiple cards from different payment brands thru an easy to use graphical user interface.
"We are thrilled to be teaming up with MasterCard for this promotion," said Michael Mullagh, CEO for ViVOtech. "We believe that NFC will transform the way consumers pay for a variety of retail services, and obtain localized content. ViVOtech is proud to be on the forefront of this exciting technology."
Editor's Insight: While this announcement does not specifically mention the application of near field communication to vending, it will have a significant impact on the vending industry. The technology now exists to enable consumers to make contactless credit purchases from vending machines.
The contactless credit card payment equipment has already been introduced to the vending industry. This same equipment will enable consumers to use their mobile phones to make credit card purchases from vending machines.
This has major implications for the vending industry, as it will make vending transactions much faster. It will also reduce the amount of cash vending operators will have to deal with, and it will allow a broader range of price points. 04-05-06 by Elliot Maras
