Moving from building monitoring to a teaching opportunity

You may have recently seen news coverage around Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg who has inspired an international movement to fight climate change. She has gained international attention by speaking at the UN Climate Talks, at WEF in Davos, and recently has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. If we had voting power, we’d definitely vote for Greta.
Surprised that someone so young could make such an impact on the issue of climate change? We’re not. We see the same excitement and passion for sustainability and the future of our environment from students at both Whitefish School District and Pulteney Grammar School.
Earlier this year these two schools and school districts—located on opposite sides of the world—teamed up to create curriculum to teach students about sustainability, SMART goals, and how they can leverage tools like Buddy Ohm to monitor progress. Currently being piloted at both schools, here are some of the lessons students are learning:

The pilot curriculum provides a well-rounded, holistic approach for students to begin to understand or expand on their understanding of sustainability. They learn about their physical impact on the environment and are given strategies on how they can begin to shift and improve their behaviors; with Buddy Ohm being one of the tools they use to measure success.
While the curriculum is in its pilot stages, both schools are committed to expanding their work by bringing in other schools and school districts as they learn and adapt the lessons. In 10 years, we won’t be shocked if there are hundreds of thousands of young climate activists just like Greta leading the way in shaping the future for our planet.
