Early adopters carry the cost of R&D, the downstream profits come from economies of scale and reduction of components that can be mass produced. In saying that I can't see the coloured lights getting below $20. I would suggest the biggest cost for LifX currently would be forward ordering stock to keep up with demand. So I would say in that regard they are already profitable once that's factored.

The home product may have an energy and possible water, internal and external temp, Bulbs could do internal though. It would be a one off cost, as I cannot see a home paying a subscription unless it was gov or utility subsidised. Would be more useful for solar users to make the most of the produced energy that you get bugger all for generating.

The value of the home product could be user usage patterns, analytics/ data mining possibly.
