Interesting article but its hard work to wade through when spaces between words have been omitted. I am used to scanning documents quickly to ascertain the more important points and for some reason that is very difficult when the grammar isn't as good as it should be.

Antibiotics are essential life saving medicines and have been ever since penicillin was "discovered" but they are big sticks that take out many beneficial bacteria as well as the targets. That weakens the bodies natural immune system that is already a mere shadow of its former self due to our fastidiously clean existence in the modern western world that doesn't allow our immune systems to build up strength from repeated low level exposure to nasty bugs. That means we become more and more dependent on antibiotics for things that 200 years ago our natural immune systems would have shaken off without a second glance.

We can't and wouldn't want to turn back the clock but antibiotic use could be hugely reduced and subsequent resistance virtually eliminated by focusing medical research on strengthening our immune systems so they can do most of the heavy lifting. Antibiotics can then just be used as a backstop if the immune system can't handle the problem.

This would mean a completely new funding model for medical research and I have no idea how that would work but I am certain that it would be a far better system than the current arms race where ever more powerful and broad spectrum antibiotics are developed and subsequently snookered by truly frightening bugs that are the direct result of those new antibiotics.
