Was chatting to a friend in Hong Kong recently who mentioned a couple of products I hadn't heard of before, that are relevant to FRX.
In my mind the key to success is distribution (and visibility) and price (at a profitable level).
1. PokeFi - www.mypokefi.com
Seems to be a 4G wifi modem with unknown carrier. Don't appear to offer a SIM only option. Has been distrubuted at numerous outlets at HKG airport for about 12 months and has good reviews on Flyertalk forum.
Covers 60 countries - www.mypokefi.com/country-list - so less than FRX but gets most of the majors
Upfront is HK990 (US$125) in the airport (or HK1390 with postage online) including 5GB
Top up US$15/5Gb ($3/GB) or US$6/GB -- way cheaper than Flexiroam -- and valid for 2years
Also have a US$15/5day price (non-consec days but speed limited after 750Mb so arguably not as good as the data plan)
2. Birdie Travel SIM - www.birdie.com.hk
SIM only data offering with flat daily prices (daily limit of 300-500MB then speed capped)
Prices range from (these are prices valid to 30-Sep-18 and listed as 50% off (somewhat like Flexiroam)
HK12 (US$1.50)/day (HK, Sing, Malaysia, Japan) to HK40 (US$5) (Aus, NZ, US) to HK60 (US$7.50) (UK, France, Germany, Italy)
Some countries cheaper than Flexiroam, some more expensive, but doesn't require the 1+ month in advance for cheaper pricing
