On the assumption that any answer will reference the Reneweconomy website, here's a heads up.
Reneweconomy June 2016 - "The cancellation of 16,000 MW of proposed coal plants"
Reneweconomy Feb 2017 - "the country is planning to build an extra 65GW of coal-fired capacity in the next few years."
(Note the arguably visual trickery employed in expressing cancellation in MW but increases in GW.)
The Feb 2017 article contains what appear to be internal contradictions.
* could be completely coal free by 2050, with no need to build another coal power plant after 2025
* planning to build an extra 65GW of coal-fired capacity in the next few years.
* the need to build new coal could be staunched by 2025
Are they planning to start the extra construction soon then stop part way in 2025. What does this say to Reneweconomy' s credibility?
Now, as stated often, I'm all for an economic & rational transition to clean energy. Shutting the low efficiency brown coal burning Hazelwood down could have been a positive IF alternatives had been made available (explore for gas?).
