I agree with your opinion of NHC's management and rehab, and they have some influential major shareholders, but when lawyers and politicians are involved, anything can happen.

Short selling volumes have decreased the last few days, but the amount outstanding has grown. The sellers are evaporating and the buyers are stepping up. The court case is over until early October, so there is enough time in the interim for the shorts to have a panic attack.
To the shorts: if you're going to panic, best do it first!
