In 2011, Santos signed a farm-in agreement for two coal seam gas (known in Indonesia as coal bed methane or CBM) licences in South Sumatra, and extended the partnership in 2013 with the addition of two further licences. The acreage is close to the South Sumatra to West Java gas pipeline, and offers exposure to the increasing domestic gas market demand and robust gas prices.
An exploration drilling program commenced in the first half of 2013 in the Ogan Komering PSC to test the potential of the CBM play. As at the end of March 2014, ten wells have been drilled and cores have been successfully acquired from the target Muara Enim formation. A pilot program is underway.
