I have a slightly different view on the future of cobalt. However I would happily be corrected. In fact I really hope I’m wrong.
At the moment the price of copper is surging and as a result the “big boys - BHP et al- will be ramping up production to ensure they take advantage of the higher price. But guess what, one of the big by-products is cobalt. And at the moment the market for cobalt is relatively small, so any increase in supply will lead to prices being subdued.
Sadly I can’t see the price of cobalt going anywhere until demand increases significantly. Yes, it will happen but when? Your quess is as good as mine!
So we are currently trying to hatch a lemon! Even the most optimistic modeling done on this blog had the cost of production at 40k per tonne. Therefore with the spot price of cobalt at 33k per tonne, this project is going nowhere.
I’d suggest management should seriously put the project on ice and start looking for another opportunity. They have enough money in the bank to make a reasonable “fresh start”.
In the meantime, I will go away and lick my wounds and find new things to invest in.
