Chooks have a gizzard, which is like a muscular ball that grinds up the grain and the shellgrit is necessary for this grinding and breaking down the grain. If they free-range they will pick up similar particles naturally.
Another good trick is keep your egg shells, dry them out in the oven or sun until brittle then crunch them up and recycle them to the chooks.
