A not-for-profit Victorian child-care provider has offered to buy up to 40 centres operated by ABC Learning which went into administration last week.
Try Youth and Community Services, which provides care to about 5,000 Victorian children is keen to take over the centres in Melbourne and eastern Victoria.
The Government is spending $22-million to keep ABC centres open until of the year after it was revealed that 40 per cent of them are unprofitable.
The Chief Executive of Try Youth and Community Services, Damien Mowlam, says ABC learning grew too quickly.
"They didn't have the infrastructure, or the management, in place to cater for that growth," he said.
"We run a number of child care centres now. So we believe we've got the experience and knowledge to ensure that a large majority of the centres are at least at a break-even level, if not at a surplus."
Mr Mowlam says it is a great opportunity for the community sector to start running child care.
"There will always be a number of centres that may have a small loss, but in these cases they're often such an important community service that they're important to keep running."
