Ha, high roller eh ?
You probably go back awhile as well @h00ts. Before Etrade and Comsec we had full service brokers that charged like wounded bulls (2.5% buy and sell commissions if I remember correctly). I remember putting in sell orders with Potter Partners and the price would go 15c over my sell order on the day and my sale would not go through. I would ask why not and they said their traders sell order was missed on the trading floor when they used to hold up tickets and shout to be heard before the days of automated trading
People trading stocks today have no idea how good they have it. We had to pay exorbitant commissions for trades and their advice was next to useless. They talked me out of purchasing a stock telling me it was to high and wait for a pullback (Orbital Sarich Tecnology SST). It went on to go up 5 fold within a year. They steered me into risky call/put options where I made a quick profit only to go to loose the equivalent of a years wages in short order. Would not touch them ever again as the odds are staked against the retail punter.
Technology has made things faster and cheaper with all the information available to make decisions available online without having to pore over printed company reports of old. Broking houses have changed with the times but their motto to look after number one first and their investors second has not. No broking house is going to tell you diversification is for sissy's and if you want to make the big life changing profits you need to have convictions in your research and beliefs and put the bulk of your bets on big LTH's. They would get sued giving such risky advice and its not in their interests for clients to get independently rich and not be in need of their services. They make their fortunes in keeping you over decades making steady profits in good times or bad and a nice 20% more on profits above a certain point but no loss if the market tanks.
Hope after everything you had to do the sale of your yacht went through
