Cant shine a light on Super Companies that let you choose your own shares but I can give you the reasons we went with setting up our own SMSF. We initially looked at going with a Super Fund that allowed us to pick shares of our own choice as our own personal share portfolios invested in banks shares bought after the 2008 correction well and truly outperformed our super funds. Here is a list of the Pro's and Con's of a Industry Super Fund that allows you to purchase shares.
The Pros
Great for the inexperienced investors to take control of their super
Less time/paperwork involved than a SMSF
Lower fees if you only have a relatively small balance to start with
The Cons
Some only allow you to buy from the top ASX listed companies.(Or they did at the time)
A2M was not on the allowed list because of this if you bought in the float
Most if not all funds to protect themselves and you from a bad call limit you to a maximum of 10% or so you are allowed to allocate to a individual company.
Just think of the repercussions of having a big slice of your super in BIG or SGH.
They charge you higher buy and sell fees but also a ongoing percentage of your portfolios worth whether its up or down for the year.
It might not seem like much but work out the commission you would pay on 20K, 200K, 2M or 20M balance. Makes the fixed costs of a SMSF of a few thousand a year seem cheap indeed.
If you decide to go down the SMSF path make sure you consider doing it thru a trusted accountant as a lot of those discount SMSF spruikers take zero liability for any penalties imposed by the ATO for non compliance whether it was accidental or not.
