I used to struggle with concept of shorting still do in some ways .

Naked shorting against the rules but shorters can and do uncover things that can be missed by the market . And i guess in a capital aspect of the market in general they preserve it. ie without profit they dont exist and a stock that has lost its value has no capital gain for the ever increasing pool of funds for people to be able multiple from .
