The "measurement for a piece of string" - it's reasonably easy.
It is twice the distance from the middle to one end.
The reason I offered the answer is to demonstrate that it is important to think beyond hackneyed cliches. And I am definitely not having a go at you @big finn as what you have noted is very common.
Here are another two examples.
1. "When and immovable object meets an irresistible force". This two things can not exist together in our Universe. One must, by definition, cancel the other out. If, you have an immovable object, then you cannot have an irresistible force and vica versa.
2. "If it aint broke don't fix it". Seriously the number of time you see this terrible idea offered up as a reason to do nothing!! I think all of us should be very, very glad that aircraft engineers don't think that way.
What's my point?
Keep thinking and try not to rely on hackneyed cliches. Particularly when they are a very, very poor substitute for coherent and substantive debate.
