Mr Elphinstone is the Managing Director of Elphinstone Pty Ltd/William Adams Pty Ltd group of companies. He established the Elphinstone group of companies in 1975 to provide services to the underground mining industry. The company designs and manufactures its own range of underground mining equipment. Today Elphinstone equipment is sold throughout Australia and overseas by the Caterpillar dealer network.

The Elphinstone/William Adams group of companies owns and operates the Caterpillar dealership in Victoria and Tasmania. A subsidiary company of the group, Serco Project Engineering Ltd, provides logistical, warehousing, maintenance and other services to the New Zealand armed forces, the New Zealand police force, ambulance and fire services. Other companies within the Elphinstone group are working on research and development projects.

Mr Elphinstone is a Director of Burnie Port Corporation, Caterpillar Elphinstone Pty Ltd and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
