Most countries were on a gold standard when the constitution was drafted. But, the constitution is crystal clear. States must use only gold and silver for the settlement of debts.
The commonwealth prints currency, which isn’t necessarily the same as money. One of the characteristics of money is that it retains its value. Not something our currency has done.
