I’ve a vivid memory of a childhood friend of mine and farm neighbour who was an exceptional 2ndry school athlete from a strong catholic family..his father was a teacher... I was quite close to him even tho his younger twin brothers were only a year older than me . I’m guessing because when we paired off for footy etc it was natural the youngest went with the oldest. He was a childhood hero...I remember thinking it odd one day when one of the younger twins ..said some aside about the older brother being a poof...I hadn’t noticed it ..but new what it meant....
Not long later I hear he’s become a Jesuit priest in training..which seemed quite inexplicable..he’d recently won the Victorian championships in a prestigious athletic event. I visited the family a short time later as neighbours and he was there and overnight it was like talking to a completely different person...from my sort of best mate in the whoop whoop to this serious formal persona...he may have been 17 ......he was obviously shoved into the church to hide away his homosexuality....
