-Is there competition between crops and trees?

Shelterbelt field trials conducted by agro forestry experts have shown benefits to crop yields due to less evapotranspiration, less physical damage and temperature modification. Improved yields of around 10% have been found in crops adjacent to shelterbelts up to 10 times the height of the planted trees. The mallee root system is dominated by numerous tap roots that actively exploit deep soil moisture, minor lateral root systems exploit soil moisture adjacent to the trees, however these roots are predomunantly below the active growing zone of cereal crops.

Mallees grow in infertile soils, survive in extreme climate conditions and are resistant to insect and plant pathogens.

    what competition ???????????????????????
as if market forces , especially these days , would ensure mallees are planted in quality soiled , decent rainfall areas .The rising price of food , crop/otherwise ,is clear to anyone that mallee cannot compete with crops .Its obviously not economical and doesn't happen.MALLEE is only for the poorer , rain deficient soils.
