While it may be true for BVF that they were just acting as White Knights. I think that's best case scenario though. 

Also possible was that they were protecting their much bigger existing investment from going into the hands of the lenders.

When it comes to institutions I think it's best always best to be suspicious. They have more information available to them, their objectives don't have to align with retail holders and they only act in the best interests of themselves.
